Euro Championships 2016 Betting Guide

The European Championship kicks off in France on June 10th and for the first time, 24 nations in 6 groups will compete for the European crown.

If you’re interested in betting on Euro 2016 you’ll want to check out our in-depth guide to the big favourites and hopeless outsiders.

This year brings together plenty of contenders for the cup. England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland all made it through, while the likes of Spain, Germany, France and Italy will be waiting.

Will Spain go on to claim their third European Cup? Will world champions and tournament favourites Germany triumph again? Or will a dark horse emerge and take us all by surprise?

France have a youthful and vibrant side who will be looking to replicate their 1998 World Cup triumph on home soil. There are some strong players in the Belgium squad, England have seen some exciting talent emerge in the last season, and Portugal will always have Ronaldo.

Let’s take a look at the teams in the competition and how likely they are to lift the cup.

Group A – France / Switzerland / Albania / Romania (predicted finish)

France go into the competition as strong contenders. However, the odds of France going all the way and winning the competition have lengthened in the wake of recent scandals involving Karim Benzema and other team members. This has resulted in Didier Deschamps leaving Benzema – his star striker – out of the Euro 2016 squad. France still have the likes of Anthony Martial up front and plenty of other goal scorers like Paul Pogba and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.

This France team has the perfect blend of experience and youth, and there’s no doubt that they have some serious potential, especially with home advantage.

France’s toughest competitors in the group stage will be Switzerland, who have a hard-working team and are more than capable of causing an upset. Switzerland are above France in the FIFA rankings (but when have they ever made sense?), led by their star player, Xherdan Shaqiri of Stoke City. The former Munich man always delivers on the international stage and has racked up 4 goals in qualification. The Swiss should be good for the last 16 and they will be joined by the hosts.

Albania go in as total outsiders but we believe they are capable of stealing a second place finish if either of the two group favourites underperform. Although they are lacking goal scorers they perform well defensively. Romania will struggle to make an impact from the get-go. They lack serious firepower and their record of 5 wins out of 10 qualifiers speaks for itself.

Group B – England / Wales / Slovakia / Russia (predicted finish)

England were the only squad to achieve a 100% record in qualifying, but they still struggle against top teams in friendlies.

England have the individual talent to suggest they could be real contenders but, as always, seem unable to turn in the kind of performances to inspire real belief. They haven’t been exciting to watch since the 2006 World Cup.

However, with the likes of Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane, and Dele Alli, these young lions may just prove us all wrong. Kane and Vardy will be the ones to watch out for, with Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge (if he makes the cut) both adding to a strong goal scoring threat.

Wales will be heading to France intent on making their own history. They have Gareth Bale who has taken them this far already, the Real Madrid man can win games on his own and can certainly tear through England. Aaron Ramsey and Ashley Williams make up a mediocre team that lacks tournament experience. But still, despite that, they look like they will do well.

Slovakia qualified impressively with 7 wins from 10 games. Napoli’s Marek Hamsik is the key man as they make their first appearance as an independent nation. They will be a challenge for any team to beat but they don’t have the depth to qualify for the last 16. Russia are not as strong as they used to be, Artem Dzyuba is the one to watch but he won’t be able to save this team.

Group C – Germany / Poland / Ukraine / Northern Island (predicted finish)

Germany have always performed well in tournaments and the world champions will certainly make their mark in France. The squad is filled with talent - they are not lacking in any area. We believe this team will go all the way to the final. They should stroll through the group stage without any hiccups. The next best is Poland who have the goal-scoring feats of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski to carry them deep into the tournament.

Poland are worth a bet as they offer good odds and could be solid challengers.

Ukraine only just managed to make it to France through the playoffs. They were strong third-place finishers and boasted a good record, but they find themselves in a strong group and their top scorer Andriy Yarmolenko and Sevilla winger Yevhen Konoplyanka are their only hope to progress.

Martin O’Neill worked wonders to get Northern Ireland to the Euros but they are lacking the quality needed to compete in this group.

Group D – Spain / Croatia / Czech Republic / Turkey (predicted finish)

Spain crashed out the 2014 World Cup early and will be looking to reignite their international dominance in this tournament. They are not the team they use to be but they still have the players to win. They have plenty of good midfielders but their forwards are no longer David Villa and Fernando Torres. They will go far but we can’t see Spain in the final.

Croatia are another team who should feel optimistic about their chances, Ivan Perisic of Inter Milan scored six goals in qualifying is their danger man while Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic and Real Madrid’s Luka Modric make a potent pair in midfield. The Czech Republic don’t look like the team they use to be, but they pushed through to top a group featuring Turkey, Iceland and the Netherlands. They can pip Croatia to second place, but we don’t see them progressing far. Turkey are the weakest team in this group, they reached the semi-finals in 2008 but this time around they are in a tougher group.

Group E Sweden / Belgium / Ireland / Italy (Predicted finish)

The group of death – Belgium top the FIFA ranking but we don’t see them topping this group.

They have a team of talented players but seem to be a bit like England when it comes to International football. Roman Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, and Eden Hazard will be the key men, but they are missing Vincent Kompany, which will no doubt weaken them at the back. As a world-class defender and strong captain, they will miss him immensely. They will progress past the group stages but only second to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden.

Sweden don’t have the best team but they have a strong enough team of hard workers and the fact that they have Ibrahimovic up top guarantees they will get goals. He is world class and will take his team through. They are worth a bet as they are seen as unlikely contenders but when they have Zlatan in the team they are capable of beating any team in the competition.

Italy are not the team they use to be, Pirlo, Buffon and Ballotelli are not in the squad. They have Southampton's Graziano Pelle to rely on goals, and they always deliver on the international stage but we don’t think they can survive this group.

Ireland can only hope for a miracle if they want to progress. They will earn points but not enough to go through. The Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane double act is enough proof to know that the Irish will fight every inch of the way.

Group F – Iceland / Portugal / Austria / Hungary – (Predicted finish)

Iceland stormed through the qualifying campaign and did it in style. We all see them as footballing minnows but they are looking very strong. They have a relatively weak group with Portugal their biggest competition. Cristiano Ronaldo will really need to work his magic to put a very average Portugal team through. They seem to be a flaky team who can throw away a match on a stupid challenge. The likes of Joao Moutinho and Nani will need to provide Ronaldo with something, while they can only hope that Pepe keeps his cool at the back. Portugal will progress but it will be the same old story, they will likely crash out in the quarters.

Austria could very well make it through with Bayern Munich’s David Alaba being their main man. Other than that they are a pretty hollow team and lack the players to progress very far. They will need a win from their first game against Hungary if they are to stand a chance. Hungary have very little chance of making any impact here. They have struggled in qualifying and don’t have the experience or talent to get goals.
