Wimbledon Tournament 2016 Betting Guide

The much-loved Wimbledon tournament – the highlight of the tennis calendar – is approaching.

British fans will be rooting for Andy Murray to challenge reigning champion Novak Djokovic, who has won in the last two competitions and has proved himself as the world number one.

Men’s tennis is in a great place at the moment with a number of great players like Nadal, Murray, Federer and Djokovic making it as exciting as ever.

Serena Williams is doing the same thing in the women’s tournament. The women’s draw looks just as exciting with Serena Williams the bookies favourite to pick up the crown. It all comes down to one match and anything can happen. Let’s see who will likely win this Grand Slam.

Men Favourites Wimbledon 2016

Novak Djokovic

He’s had a string of impressive tournaments and climbed the ranks to number one. He knows what it takes to win Wimbledon and has clawed his way back from losing sets. The Serbian is rarely challenged and when he is, it’s by an on-form Roger Federer. He goes into Wimbledon as a strong favourite and will likely pick up his third straight Wimbledon Grand Slam. He’s at the top of his game but will Andy Murray bring the fight that’s needed to topple this tennis superstar?

Andy Murray

Murray will be looking to add to his one Wimbledon title. The Scotsman can definitely cause problems for the Serbian. He’ll be playing in front of the home fans and he prefers the grass surface too. He’s already beaten Djokovic with a superb performance in the Canadian Open. He comes into the tournament full of confidence after the most successful clay-court season of his career, picking up titles in Germany, Madrid and reaching the semi-finals of the French Open where he was beaten by Djokovic in a thrilling five-set encounter. Last year Murray eased through the first week without dropping a set, only to be defeated by rising star Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals. Murray will most likely make it to the finals and is most certainly worth a bet. He has been pipped to the win in the past by Djokovic, Nadal and Federer but he’s gone on to put himself in that pack of winners. If he’s on-form and the home fans get behind him, it might be enough to motivate the tennis star to take the win.

Roger Federer

The Swiss superstar has won Wimbledon a record seven times and one more can see him breaking the record that he shares with tennis legend Pete Sampras. Federer is one of the best tennis players to ever grace the court and there are no doubts about his ability to win more grand slams. He hasn’t picked up so many grand slams in recent years but his performances are always strong and he’s good enough to topple the mighty power of Novak Djokovic. The odds on Roger Federer are good and well worth a flutter. But at 33-years-old, time is against Federer, and he’ll have to really push the limits if he’s to win an eighteenth Grand Slam title. Despite his age, the Swiss star still manages to add trophies to his extensive collection. It’s been three years since he has lifted a Grand Slam. He still has what it takes and will be yearning for the opportunity to get his hands on another title. There are great odds for Federer to go all the way and that’s where I’d put my money.

Rafael Nadal

The Spaniard is a sensational tennis player, he brings the power and skill to beat anyone. The former world number one, two-time Wimbledon Champion and three-time runner-up is currently ranked tenth. His preferred surface is clay so he’s never really played his best at Wimbledon. We could see a resurgent Nadal after injury. The Spanish player will be looking to climb the rankings again and place himself as one the world’s best. Since the Spaniard has dropped down the rankings its likely he’ll be seeding against some tough opposition as early as the fourth round. He’ll have a tough tournament ahead of him.

Stan Wawrinka

Swiss player Stan Wawrinka proved his Grand Slam quality when he won the French Open over Novak Djokovic in stunning fashion. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves and once again finds himself with outside odds. The 30-year-old will certainly be a threat but there’s too much quality above him. He proved no match for his fellow countryman when they faced off in last year’s Wimbledon. Wawrinka is a very inconsistent player but he can beat anybody on any surface when at his best. Some would say his backhand is the best in the game, and he’ll need this weapon working well if he’s going to beat the likes of Djokovic, Federer or Murray.

Women Favourites Wimbledon 2016

Serena Williams

Another legend of the sport, Serena has dominated the women’s division in recent years and despite losing the final Grand Slam last year, the American still has the skills to dominate her tournaments this year. She’s already won 6 Wimbledon titles and will most certainly win more. At 33 years old, the America surpasses Martina Navratilova as the oldest player to triumph at SW19. She’s now won a total of 21 grand slam titles, just one shy of the open era record held by the great Steffi Graf. She is the favourite to win the title at Wimbledon but her odds are higher than usual since her loss to Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open earlier in the year. These odds are worth taking advantage of. Serena will be gunning for glory against the likes of Petra Kvitová and Simona Halep.

Petra Kvitová

The two-time Wimbledon Champion, Petra Kvitová will pose the biggest threat to Serena Williams. She’ll be hunting for her third Wimbledon title. The Czech player favours the grass surface and has looked in form in recent tournaments. Petra has dropped down the rankings but she’ll be looking to make a comeback and soar up the rankings at the most prestigious tennis tournament. There are a lot of tough competitors for Kvitová to face but Wimbledon is an event that usually brings out her best performances. Victoria Azarenka Victoria Azarenka has been on form this year and holds her fair share of tournament titles. This season has seen some outstanding performances from the world number five. She has what it takes to reach the Wimbledon finals. It will be hard for sure, but she is certainly worth a bet. She has been getting better as the year has gone on, and it looks like she’ll be a real contender in this tournament.

Angelique Kerber

Angelique Kerber bagged herself her first Grand Slam title this year. She is certainly one of the best in the competition but the German does not perform her best on grass. She will create a lot of trouble for those against her but Kerber is a long shot to win. The long odds may be worth a flutter but it’s likely that she’ll be brushed aside by the likes of Serena Williams or Azarenka.

Think Andy Murray has what it takes to win his second Wimbledon title? Or maybe you have your eye on an up-and-coming outsider. Place your Wimbledon 2016 bets with a reputable UK bookmaker. Check out the Top 5 Table above to get started.
